Located in West Africa between Sierra Leone, Guinea and Ivory Coast, Liberia is one of the poorest nations in the world. The country has a population of nearly 3.5 million, an unemployment rate of 85% and a staggering 80% of the population lives below the poverty line. Life expectancy is only 42 years and Liberia has the world’s third highest infant mortality rate.
Many in this country live in shanties made of reed mats held up by wooden poles. The thatch or zinc metal roofs are often all that stands between those inside and the intense sun during the dry season and the heavy tropical downpours during the rainy season.
Water used for drinking, bathing, cooking and cleaning is drawn from whatever source is available; often a hand dug pit, a stream, pond, puddle or river. Disease is easily & readily spread through contaminated water sources.
Yet, despite these facts, Liberians are a beautiful people, full of life, zeal and hope.
